HER WORLD IS CHANGED FOREVER*A copy was provided by Delacourte for review purposes*
Callie lost her parents when the Spore Wars wiped out everyone between the ages of twenty and sixty. She and her little brother, Tyler, go on the run, living as squatters with their friend Michael and fighting off renegades who would kill them for a cookie. Callie's only hope is Prime Destinations, a disturbing place in Beverly Hills run by a mysterious figure known as the Old Man.
He hires teens to rent their bodies to Enders—seniors who want to be young again. Callie, desperate for the money that will keep her, Tyler, and Michael alive, agrees to be a donor. But the neurochip they place in Callie's head malfunctions and she wakes up in the life of her renter, living in her mansion, driving her cars, and going out with a senator's grandson. It feels almost like a fairy tale, until Callie discovers that her renter intends to do more than party—and that Prime Destinations' plans are more evil than Callie could ever have imagined. . . .
In this world that Lissa has created it’s not uncommon for people to be well over 100 years old in fact it’s because of their age that this story line even takes place. Callie is just 16 living on the streets with her 7 year old brother Tyler and best friend/romance-in-the-making Michael, also 16. The world that is described is one that the Enders are not only the old ones but also the rich ones and the Starters are the ones that are poor, living on the streets, cannot get jobs and basically having to rent out their bodies to make any money to live off of. After a raid in the building that they were staying at Callie has made up her mind even though she doesn’t want to “rent” her body out, she has to protect her little brother.
I loved how the story progressed and couldn’t put it down I’d say from the mid-point to the ending. It had me wondering what was going to happen next, was the bad guy really the bad guy or the good guy like he was saying. I couldn’t guess what would be happening next and I love that I was able to be surprised with whatever the next move was. There was a lot of action in Starters as well as some romance. The plot was so-so until about mid-point then it picked up and was faced paced until the very end. I would like to know more about the war that killed a lot of people, the Spore War as it’s called. And how they got the names Starters (younger kids) and Enders (older people).
Callie is a strong girl who fights for the ones that she loves and doesn’t stand down to a fight or anyone else, regardless of their ranking. I loved how the story gave us different angles to look at to see which side was telling the truth, who to really trust, and also the betrayal and love that some characters gave. My heart ached for Callie in so many ways. Having to take care of her younger brother, always having his best intentions in mind can sometimes put her in situations that she would have never been in otherwise. The ending of the book was a shocker to me I can’t wait to see how Enders, the next installment, will turn out. I have so many questions that I know Lissa will have an answer too. If you’re looking for something that is action packed, full of mystery, and leaving you wanting for more this is the book for you.
