In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.*A review copy was provided by Netgalley & Harlequin for review purposes*
Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.
Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die or become one of the monsters.
Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.
Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.
But it isn’t easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.
This was the first time of reading any of Ms. Kagawa’s
work and I loved every bit of it. Now, I’ll stop you before you come after me
with pitchforks…I do have the Fey series in my possession, I just need to find
time to read them. With that said back to The
Immortal Rules. I really enjoyed this even though I was able to see some
things coming.
Allie has grown up hating Vampires for what they are and
what they do. She lives with a group known as the Unregistered in the Fringe
and finding food is scarce but it’s better than being Registered to her;
meaning she’d have to be one that provides the vampires her blood willingly.
She is a strong character with a lot of backbone, she fights for what she feels
is right in her heart – or where it was. She has the strength to keep trying
and/or fighting regardless of the situation. Her character really made me
question what would I do if I were faced in a situation as she was…die or
become what you hate the most.
After Allie’s life has changed she is learning everything
from Kanin; her maker of sorts. She finds that things aren’t as easy as they
seem and that even if she wanted to go back to her old life, she just isn’t
welcome there anymore. She is faced with more heartache after everything that
she’s already been through. Here’s my thing…I read this in between watching
True Blood so with everything that was being described to Allie I was
constantly seeing the cast of True Blood. The premise to The Immortal Rules also reminded me of the movie Daybreakers
(which, by the way I love). So I had a mix of things going through my head with
the world building because I would either see parts of Daybreakers or True
Blood…or both. O_o
Everyone knows that there has to be love, right?! This
wasn’t a insta-love however you could definitely see where the characters stood
from the beginning but watching them grow closer towards each other is what I
loved the most about this. I loved seeing certain characters being called out
on their flaws as they were trying to bring people down, I loved seeing
characters sacrifice themselves out of love for one another; even if that meant
going against everything they had
always believed and lived by.
The Immortal Rules
is action packed with a great story to follow through. You could easily read it
in one sitting or take some breaks and be able to pick it back up without
having to go back and try to remember what was happening when you left off. This
is one series that I will definitely be following through because I can’t see
what is going to come next from this new world that Julie has created.

Great point about insta-love. The thought didn't cross my mind when reading or reviewing The Immortal Rules, which actually speaks for itself - it's one of the first things I notice and it irritates me no end when boy meets girl and declares undying love 5 pages later! Great review!
ReplyDeleteP.S. You aren't the only one that hasn't read the Iron Fey series...shhhh!
SO glad that you loved this book. I really loved it too. Julie is a fantastic writer. I get so lost in the worlds she creates. Fabulous review babe!!
ReplyDeleteYAY! So glad you liked it. I can't wait for the next book.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you loved this book :) I also just finished reading it! The romance was definitely awesome. You could definitely see the attraction and admiration at the beginning, but as you said, it wasn't insta-love. It was very slow building and absolutely great to read!
ReplyDelete*raises hand* I'm another one who hasn't read the Iron Fey series! I do have the first book in my TBR pile though.
Have an awesome day!
