Nara Collins is an average sixteen-year-old, with one exception: every night she dreams the events of the following day. Due to an incident in her past, Nara avoids using her special gift to change fate…until she dreams a future she can’t ignore.

After Nara prevents a bombing at Blue Ridge High, her ability to see the future starts to fade, while people at school are suddenly being injured at an unusually high rate.

Grappling with her diminishing powers and the need to prevent another disaster, Nara meets Ethan Harris, a mysterious loner who seems to understand her better than anyone. Ethan and Nara forge an irresistible connection, but as their relationship heats up, so do her questions about his dark past.

What would you do if you were able to see what was going to happen the next day? Would you prevent bad things from happening or would you ignore it and let fate have its way? This is what Nara goes through every night. It’s a great gift and a curse all at the same time. Although she can see the future, it’s limited; she only sees what will happen when she wakes up the next day.

Nara is a strong character and is doing only what she thinks is the right thing to do. When she dreams that there will be a bombing at the school she has to step in and stop it from happening. This changes everything for her. She is tried and tested throughout her friendships and from that a new friendship and romance starts with the one and only Ethan that is a mystery himself.

I loved the plot to this story. It reminded me of Final Destination in a way, minus the gore. Seeing Nara go from relying on her gift to see the next day to actually living it without knowledge of what was going to happen was an amazing - yet nerve-wracking - experience. Nara doesn’t back down from a fight, and she’s definitely giving fate a battle. She’s been through so much in her life with the knowledge that she’s had from her dreams, but what if someone - a boy - could change all that?

The romance that is in Brightest Kind of Darkness is truly beautiful. Ethan is the sweet, tender guy that no one has really had the chance to get to know because of his own special gift. He takes the pain away from others. He’s always there for Nara, supporting her in any way that he can. I was so glad to see the outcome with the two of them and cannot wait to start Lucid, the second novel in the series, to see where they go from here.

If you’re looking for a great read that sucks you in from the beginning, with twists and turns that you won’t see coming, then this is definitely one that you’ll want to get your hands on. I’m so glad that I finally had time to read this one and can’t wait to start Lucid.
